Ihren Namen verdankt die Andromedagalaxie dem Sternbild Andromeda, das wiederum seinen Ursprung in der griechischen Mythologie hat. Die Andromedagalaxie ist mit bloßem Auge zu erkennen und steht ganzjährig am Himmel und doch haben die wenigsten Menschen sie je zu Gesicht bekommen. Das liegt zum Teil an der zunehmenden Lichtverschmutzung, aber auch an dem Umstand, dass sie nicht einfach zu finden ist. Sich auf die Suche zu machen lohnt sich und der beste Zeitpunkt ist die sternenklare wolkenlose Herbstnacht. Dann nämlich steht die „kleine Wolke“, wie sie vom persische Entdecker Al Sufi im Jahr 964 gennnat wurde, hoch im Norden, – im Sternbild Andromeda. Ein einfaches Fernglas und die Orientierung am auffälligen Sternbild Kassiopeia kann helfen, das neblige Objekt zu finden. The Andromeda galaxy can be seen with the naked eye and is in the sky all year round, yet very few people have ever seen it. That’s partly because of increasing light pollution, but also because it’s not easy to find. The search is worthwhile and the best time is the starry, cloudless autumn night. Then the „little cloud“, as it was called by the Persian discoverer Al Sufi in the year 964, is high in the north – in the constellation Andromeda.
